Opportunities

This is a list of especially promising opportunities that EA Toronto has identified, and we are sharing it here to bring it to the attention of our community members. Selection for this list is based on two factors:

  1. The opportunity’s similarity to CEA‘s examples of promising opportunities, given further below
  2. The opportunity’s accessibility to EA Toronto community members

(Nearly all of CEA’s examples of opportunities require relocation and work visas, though we should not be discouraged by this. We can find and create similar roles in Canada, effectively charting new territory!)

CEA’s Examples of Promising Opportunities

The items below are not a complete list of the opportunities that CEA values; it is a list of standout examples.

List A
Artificial Intelligence (AI), Existential Risk and Global Catastrophic Risk Organisations: Roles at the following organisations – Future of Humanity Institute, Machine Intelligence Research Institute, any top AI lab (OpenAI, DeepMind, Google Brain, Facebook AI Research), Ought.
Effective Altruism Organisations: Roles at the following organisations – 80,000 Hours, Berkeley Existential Risk Initiative, Centre for Effective Altruism, CFAR, Founders Pledge, GiveWell, Global Priorities Institute, Open Philanthropy Project,
Academia: Tenure track positions in any internationally-ranked top 10 department for computer science, biology, economics or philosophy.
Other: Roles listed in 80,000 Hours’ list of priority paths and not previously mentioned above (considered on a case-by-case basis).

Positions with any Open Philanthropy Project or GiveWell grantee (this does not include GiveWell recommendations)
Top 10 computer science PhD program (internationally ranked)
Top 10 economics PhD program (internationally ranked)
Recipients of an EA Grant or a BERI Project Grant for funding for a year of full-time work or equivalent (this does not include EA Community Grant recipients).

Internships for any of the positions in List A (minimum of 6 weeks)
Top 10 biology PhD program (internationally ranked)
Top 10 philosophy PhD program (internationally ranked)
Top 10 computer science PhD program (locally ranked)
